Blue target Als' DC
Burke was candidate for Bombers' job in 2010

The turtle derby to become the Winnipeg Blue Bombers defensive co-ordinator has a new contender.

After getting spurned by both Richie Hall and Corey Chamblin, it appears Bomber head coach Paul LaPolice is now attempting to pry Alouettes defensive co-ordinator Tim Burke out of Montreal.

Burke has spent the past three seasons with the Alouettes as their DC and defensive backs coach. Montreal made it to the Grey Cup all three years, winning the last two championships, and its defences were always one of the league’s top-ranked units.

Burke’s contract status with the Alouettes isn’t clear, but LaPolice would likely have no trouble appointing Burke as his assistant head coach if a “promotion” is needed to get him out of Quebec. There is also the possibility that Burke isn’t currently contractually obligated to the Alouettes for the 2011 season.

Coincidentally, Burke was one of the candidates to become the Bomber head coach last winter before GM Joe Mack ultimately picked LaPolice.

After Kavis Reed left the Bombers in December to join the Edmonton Eskimos as their new head coach, LaPolice said he wanted to replace him with someone who had plenty of CFL experience on the defensive side of the ball.

There aren’t many qualified candidates remaining, but Burke would certainly fit that bill as he spent three seasons on the Calgary Stampeders defensive staff before joining the Alouettes. The Cedar Rapids, Iowa, native started out as the secondary coach in Cowtown and became the defensive co-ordinator midway through the 2007 season when Denny Creehan was fired.

Before coming to the CFL in 2004, Burke spent 27 years in the NCAA ranks and was on the defensive side of the ball for all but two of those seasons.

Burke has even coached close to Winnipeg before, guiding the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux secondary from 1986 to 1988.

Hope we keep Burke, if he is under contract no way the Als let him go for a similar position.

Heard from a reliable source that Burke will be announced next as wpg DC.
Ouch part if the reason may be, that before coming in the CFL he use to coach in north Dakota, close to Wpg that is where his roots are. As I typed this, my source texted me that it was a done deal.

Will see... but personally I think this would be a good thing... let me explain...

same coach same players for three years in a row we became more predicable in 2010... It looks like Popp will lock up most FA in D for 2011 there is a potent tendency to become even more predicable... we need new ideas, new scheme to get this talent going.

First year under Burke our D was all over the stats charts...they were still dominant in 2009 and 2010 but declined a bit each year.

I would see Mike Sinclair without a doubt...

It probably would be a good thing for a new DefC. Not cause of lack of performance but sometimes the same messenger with the same message can get stale or lost on players. I wonder if Trestman has his eye on a coach from his past. I also wonder if coach Trestman has been looking at candidates for a special teams coach too.
This is a bit off topic but I hope the Seahawks win today. A punter from Rider Nation plus a losing record into the playoffs reminds me of the CFL.
Cheers all, and have a wonderfull day.

While being some good points, the problem u can get is losing some players that will follow the DC. Furthermore a new DC bring new philosophy and change in direction, it means revamp lots of player changes.
Continuity is a good thing, and predictable last year? Nope more like offense found better counters and we relaxed our level of play. See GC game for an idea of what our d us capable. No losing Burke would hurt, it does not we cannot replace him.

Still dominant but divison teams found a way to crack some of it... key players (Bowman, Cox ) are locked in and as Etienne Boulay said the other day at yes football is a business you loose player, you get new faces but players wants to win championships and the best place to do it is Montreal right now....

I think overall it still be coach Trestman philosophy Alouettes team as we now know has been built by it's design Popp get him players that can execute plays and it's okay.... That why I mentioned Mike Sinclair as a potential replacement to Burke.
