General managers prefer lists to be secret

General managers prefer lists to be secret
Mark Masters, National Post · Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010

When it comes to free agency in the Canadian Football League most teams value secrecy over publicity.

Six teams are refusing to release a list of their players who are eligible to become free agents. Only the Edmonton Eskimos and Hamilton Tiger-Cats are willing to make their lists public.

While other professional sports leagues embrace free agency as a way of generating off-season headlines, most CFL clubs prefer to operate under the radar.

"You don't want articles being written about Player A and Player B being potential free agents, because then stories will come out about, 'Why have you not signed him yet?' " B.C. Lions head coach and general manager Wally Buono said. "Then it starts becoming a me-against-him thing and nothing positive comes out of it."

The CFL usually does not release a list of potential free agents until early January. Teams are not allowed to negotiate with free agents until Feb. 16.

"I won't just give the names to reporters because if I get a deal done with a potential free agent I would rather accentuate the positive. If the name is out there earlier, then the negative -- we could lose someone -- gets talked about," Buono said.

"Honestly, I'm not trying to be secretive or anything," Winnipeg assistant general manager Ross Hodgkinson said. "I just don't think sending out a list serves a purpose right now. Why pour gasoline on a fire that hasn't even started?"

Ticats general manager Bob O'Billovich sees no problem sharing his list of potential free agents. He suggests there is no advantage for teams that try and keep their lists private.

"When we get to this stage, the guys who want to leave will let their agents know it and the agents won't actively go and call teams, but they make sure that news is out there," he said. "If there is an interest in a player moving, the other teams will know who those guys are. We can't officially talk to free agents until February, but that doesn't mean there won't be information that gets around."

O'Billovich said he knows who is eligible to become a free agent even on teams that do not release their list. "It's easy to find out ... it's no mystery who the guys are."

Saskatchewan general manager Brendan Taman has been on both sides of the issue. When he served as Bombers general manager he was happy to let reporters know which players on his roster were eligible to become free agents. One reason Taman is not releasing names this year is because he does not want to create unnecessary confusion.

"I'm hoping by the end of this week or next week I can sign a few of them, which then makes a potential free-agent list inaccurate already, right off the hop," he said. "That's sort of my philosophy behind it. I know by the end of this month we'll make our list public, but I'm trying to get a few of those names off that list first."

It's a little early to get overly wound up about a list of potential CFL free agents when teams can't do anything but re-sign its own players until Feb . 15, but it's December and just about anything passes for news these days. Nice find/research on the list X or is it Ulrich. One name jumps out at me. Chris Bauman of the Ti-Cats. I'd imagine Rider Nation will take a serious run at that guy. Hometown boy plus Fantuz taking a shot at the NFL. Maybe Popp makes a case to Bauman to come to MTL. I hope so. He would keep our ratio the same with plenty of promise. Should Cahoon depart.
I look at our list and other teams must be lookin at Jerald Brown & Hawkins very closely. Affordable and no threat to leave down south. Couldn't help but notice Anwar Stewart isn't on our list.
Anyways, thanx for the list/articles and keepin' things up to date for us on GOALSGo.

Chuggabunch,

I saw the list on my twitter feed a couple of days ago, so I posted Ullrich list here, since I knew some fans might want to look at what was going to be available from other teams, even if Popp is not renowned to sign big free agent.

You're right Anwar's not on Ullrich list but from our other topic:

I see some discrepancies (see below), but my list is based off published news link....(not saying it's 100% accurate):

Giffin, Michael - Option: 2010
Guzman, Ramon - Option: 2010
Spencer, Walter - Option: 2010
Stewart, Anwar - Option: 2010
Whitaker, Brandon - Option: 2010

Pour moi Maypray is the man for us.

CFL puts 1 on its page a couple of days before Free Agency.

Since this is not the official list, I suggest we wait for the 1 from the CFL.

He re-signed last year, 1+1 is the minimum they can sign for, so it is an option year.

I'm trying to be realistic with who stays & who goes. You can't keep em' all. $$ooo.... THis is from a money standpoint and how much easier it would be to replace with who we have for depth. These were tough decisions for me.
Would you rather:
Avon or S.J: My case for letting Avon leave: Giffin could develop as blocking back. Whitaker & Hawkins could replace the speed lost. My case for letting S.J leave: Brian Bratton has been under the radar. Put him in coach!
Whitaker or Hawkins: Both did well for the time they got on the field. Whitaker, in my mind had the edge this year. With Maypray developing, returning kicks, being a Westpoint grad (serious character) along with being 22-23yrs and sticking with the team daily. Hate to say it, but, so long Hawkins. Welcome back Whitaker & Maypray.
Anwar Stewart or Jerald Brown: I think Stew has been a great influence on Bowman and has the best quotes. Solid but with Bekasiak & Chima Ihekwoaba on the rise seems like we have the depth for a changing of the guard at DE. Jerald Brown has been fantastic. He covers the field and can shut down prime recievers. Jerald can also track mobile QB's like Durant & Burris. Which if you remeber killed us in 08'. Popp dealt with the issue and picked up Jerald and Parker and were back to back Champs. Sorry Anwar, go get the pay raise you deserve.
Duval or.... I'm not gonna start on that. One thing we must remeber though. To have one player doing double duties is hard to find. However if you can't do either consistently who cares!

IMO Avon is a must sign, for what he brings in the locker, and for putting the team first and accepting different roles. He currently is on his LB contract, when the team experimented with him at different position. Unless his demand is far fetched, u sign him, to reward his willingness yo put team first. He shut down Chad Owens on ST while running for 156 yards. To quote Seinfeld "this is gold Jerry".
As for maypray he is not a westpoint grad, he is from the same collegere as Haskins, virginia military institue.
