BYU football: Cahoon enjoying challenge of coaching
Darnell Dickson - Daily Herald | Posted: Monday, March 28, 2011 8:15 pm

Old habits die hard, even for the guy who holds all the Canadian Football League receiving records.
Ben Cahoon is experiencing his first spring as a BYU coach, but found out quickly he couldn't function without wearing receiver's gloves.
"I didn't wear gloves at all when I played at BYU and my first three years in Canada," Cahoon admitted, "but now I can't even hold the ball without them. The first few days I couldn't hang onto the ball or throw it back to the quarterback during drills, so they're a necessity."
It's all a part of getting comfortable in his new job.
Cahoon is working with a group with a lot of talent and experience. Sophomore Cody Hoffman was Jake Heaps' go-to guy by the end of 2010 and seniors McKay Jacobson, Matt Marshall and Spencer Hafoka are the veterans. Redshirt freshman Ross Apo has as much potential as any receiver the Cougars have recruited since Austin Collie, and there's a whole group of younger players trying to break into the rotation.
BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall said Cahoon was very "cerebral," and the former Montreal Allouettes star worked quietly and efficiently with his group of wide receivers on Monday.
He'd offer words of advice - "Patience on this route," or "stay low" - and when walk-on Cody Raymond dropped a pass, Cahoon called him over and spoke to him one-on-one.
"I want to set the record straight, there will be dropped passes," Cahoon said with a smile. "Every year with every team, there will be drops, but we're getting there. I will project there will be fewer."
After nine practices, Cahoon still says his new job is challenging.
"I'm enjoying it but the learning curve is steep," he said. "I'm appreciative of my guys willing to do what their rookie coach is asking them to do.
"Coaching is all consuming right now. You put in a hard day's work and it's a process. Sometimes you can put it to rest and sometimes you wake up in the middle of night. It's hard to be a BYU coach, period. But every day is a new adventure and that's what makes it fun."
hmmm nothing like the smell of victory, to the grey cup, Prepare to be boarded you bilge rat!!
